Common Questions

Fees & billing

How much will my case cost?

It depends on the kind of matter, and we'll always tell you before we start. Many services — like wills, LLC formation, and uncontested matters — are flat fees you know up front. Injury cases are contingency: you pay nothing unless we recover for you. For hourly matters, we give you a realistic estimate at the first meeting and flag it early if anything changes.

Getting started

Is the first consultation really free?

Yes. The first conversation is about whether we can help and whether we're the right fit — you shouldn't have to pay to find that out. You'll leave the consultation knowing your options, your likely costs, and your next step, whether or not you hire us.

What should I bring to my first meeting?

Bring whatever documents touch your situation — contracts, letters, court papers, police reports, photos, insurance correspondence. Don't worry about organizing them perfectly; that's our job. If you're not sure something matters, bring it anyway. A one-page timeline of events in your own words is also enormously helpful.

The court process

Will my case go to court?

Most don't. The majority of matters we handle settle through negotiation or mediation, which is usually faster, less expensive, and less stressful. That said, we prepare every case as if it will go to trial — that preparation is exactly what produces good settlements. If court is the right path for you, we'll be ready.

How long will my case take?

Honestly: it varies, and anyone who promises an exact date is guessing. An uncontested divorce or simple estate plan can wrap up in weeks; a litigated dispute can take a year or more. At your consultation we'll give you a realistic range for your specific situation, and we'll keep you updated at every milestone so you're never left wondering.

Working together

How quickly do you return calls and emails?

Within one business day — usually much sooner. "My lawyer never calls me back" is the number-one complaint people have about law firms, and we built our whole practice around not being that firm. You'll also always know which paralegal is on your matter, so there's a second person who knows your file.

Is what I tell you confidential, even before I hire you?

Yes. Consultations are protected by attorney–client privilege even if you never hire us. You can speak freely — in fact, the more honestly you tell us the whole story, good and bad, the better we can help. One caution: until we've spoken, please don't send confidential details through the website form; a short description of the matter is plenty.
